Calgary's Urban Forest: Citizen Iniative

Shaping how Calgary grows, protects, and shares its tree canopy — together

Tree Equity Campaign Map

Informazioni su questo processo

Calgary's tree canopy covers only 8% of the city — and that coverage is deeply unequal. Older, wealthier neighbourhoods enjoy mature, shaded streets while newer communities like Saddle Ridge have almost none. This process puts citizens in the driver's seat to help shape a fairer, greener Calgary.

Calgary has committed to planting 930,000 trees by 2029 and doubling its urban canopy by 2060 — but the decisions about where those trees go, who they benefit, and how they're protected are still being made. Right now, there is no bylaw protecting trees on private property, no clear mechanism for resolving neighbour disputes about trees, and no consistent plan for ensuring under-served communities get their fair share of green space.

This participatory process is a citizen-led effort to change that. Through structured proposals, community debates, and participatory budgeting, residents across Calgary — especially those in historically under-served areas — will help shape the city's urban forest strategy from the ground up. Your input will inform real recommendations to Calgary City Council.
